🎵 Do Something: The Video

I’ve been wanting to make a video for Do Something ever since my album offbeat came out, but then the endless heatwave hit. The basic premise was this:
- What if I did something (i.e. a video) for Do Something?
- What if it was some kind of simple DIY instructional video which encouraged people to Do Something?
- What if it taught the viewer how to play Do Something on the ukulele (since I am an international ukulele star and influencer)?
I tried different formats and ideas, but didn’t like the results and/or they required too much effort and/or I didn’t have the proper gear to pull them off. Besides, it had to be SIMPLE because of the CONCEPT.
So I gave up.
And then a couple of weeks ago, for some unknown reason, I gave it another shot. But this time, I went for super simple and super low-budget/production values:
- I took a picture of my ukulele, and added the chord shapes (red dots) in a drawing app.
- I imported the resulting images into Final Cut Pro (FCP) which I barely know how to use
- I imported the song audio file into FCP and turned on beat detection
- I plopped the proper images onto the music
- I used stock FCP titles and effects to add the chord names and karaoke lyrics
- I added a moving background, and I was done!
Of course, the result, basically a lyric video, was pretty boring and uninteresting unless you actually wanted to play and sing along.
So the next day, to make the video somewhat suitable for prime time (i.e. The Indie Beat Television), I added a bit more eye-candy and a few surprises. CW: Food.
The final version is still very basic but true to the original self-referential simple DIY idea, and so I decided to submit it to #TIBtv before I talked myself out of it.
The star of the show, my trusty Ukulele, a present from my son:
